Das nennt sich Wubi und ist natürlich kostenlos herunterladbar. Die Webseite ist allein schon einen Besuch wert, der Header ist einfach schon mal ‘ne lustige Anspielung… Das ist doch eine tolle Möglichkeit der schönen bunten Linux-Welt mal eine Chance zu geben, ohne gleich die eigene Windows-Installation (jaja, ich weiss, nur zum Spielen…) auf’s Spiel zu setzen (eine oft unbegründete Angst).

The Real Deal ist natürlich besser und sollte auch kein Problem darstellen, da sich Ubuntu “von Natur aus” problemlos parallel zur existierenden Windows-Installation betreiben lässt, oder – noch komfortabler – z.B. mit dem VMWare Player, wobei Windows dann nur noch als Applikation direkt unter Linux läuft. Das macht ja auch total Sinn, da Windows ja im Normalfall wesentlich öfter neu gestartet werden muss (wegen Updates etc.) als Linux.

This is actually the biggest strength of Linux. When you buy an OS from Microsoft, not only you can’t fix it, but it has had years of being skewed by one single entity’s sense of the market. It doesn’t matter how competent Microsoft — or any individual company — is, it’s going to reflect that fact.

In contrast, look at where Linux is used. Everything from cellphones and other small embedded computers that people wouldn’t even think of as computers, to the bulk of the biggest machines on the supercomputer Top-500 list. That is flexibility. And it stems directly from the fact that anybody who is interested can participate in the development, and no single entity ends up being in control of where it all goes.

Er feiert also die Vielfältigkeit von Linux und die Tatsache, dass (thoretisch) jeder an der Umsetzung und Anpassung des Betriebsystems mitarbeiten kann. Da feiere ich doch gerne mit. Ich seit Jahren jeden Tag mehr begeistert von Linux. Obwohl – oder gerade weil – ich parallel immer mit anderen System gearbeitet habe.

Der erste Absatz trifft natürlich auch auf Apple zu: Apple ist die Instanz, die (allein) bestimmt, wo es hingeht mit MacOS. Das hat sich bisher aufgrund des Diktats von Steve recht gut entwickelt. Ich bin gespannt wo die Reise da in den nächten Jahren hingeht. Persönlich ziehe ich auch die Offenheit eines Linux-Systems gegenüber den Alternativen vor.
